Homeschooling and Zucchini Bread
Today I went to Bella Stellas with William. Bella Stellas, it’s a childrens consignment shop, I was looking for a double jogger stroller (I want to start jogging). I didn’t find that but I did find a cute knitting shirt for Briana, swimming shorts for William, and a bathing suit for Briana all super cheap.
The kids are at this awkward age where they don’t last very long walking, walking a hill, forest, sidewalk…they are low activity kids. Low activity is fine, they like to concentrate their energies on art and imagination play.
While at Bella Stellas I got into a conversation with the sales lady about homeschooling. She is very nervous about her 5 year old starting kindergarten, which she will be in Irvington same as William, and I assured her that Kindergarten is cake and she had nothing to worry about. I couldn’t assure her of 1st grade though. I just did not have my expectations met for William. This maybe the key! This lady reminded me that Williams school experiences did not have to be the same as mine. I hated school, not just high school but most of elementary and middle. I did not fit in, I was picked on, it was bad. So here is the opportunity presented to William. Instead of sitting 6+ hours in a class room, being ignored, being picked on, and struggling through math etc., he can learn at home. He can read, explore museums, take music lessons, take trips to the beach, mountain, national parks, cook, do chores, and have plenty of play time in between. He won’t have to wait for 20+ students to receive a teachers help, he will just have to wait for one (his sisters). He won’t have to wait until 3:00 for extra curricular activities and be exhausted day in and day out, he will have plenty of rest time when he needs it. It’s an exciting time for him and Briana. We are planning a trip to the music store to pick out individual instruments and lessons. I read that if the child finds and falls in love with the instrument of their choosing that they are more likely to stick with it. I am learning that the community can have a big play in a child’s learning experience and it is my job to do the research to seek out opportunities for them. I have also read that homeschooling does take a little sacrifice from the parents, but I am up for it. I will have to be more social, vulnerable, and more curious. Their world will be different.
Now on to Zucchini Bread! Oh yummy yum yum.
