Out of School…For Good

Posted on June 09, 2009

Tomorrow William will finish the 1st grade. He has done wonderfully well this past year.

Summer is on its way and we are looking forward to taking advantage of the summer and all the out door activities.

In the fall William will begin directing his own learning at home and will not be returning to public school. I am hoping that with William taking charge of his education, he will be able to let go of the feeling that he is significantly smaller than his class mates which has effected his self esteem greatly, not sing “don’t wish your girlfriend was hot like me”, and no longer lack the attention needed to figure out Math.

Being one of the youngest, starting out, moms in my circle of friends has presented some challenges. My 7 year old is often out of place among the young toddlers and new moms discovering younger childhood stages. This has left me feeling out of place, because I feel like if they can’t relate to my 7 year old, they can not relate to me as a mother of a 7 year old. Its an odd feeling but I can not deny it is there. 7 is an awkward age. Its an age of discovery and finding sure footing. He is finding out what is excepted and what is not and he is experiencing what its like to be judged and excepted or not excepted. I wonder what 8 will be like.

You need to read Parenting by the Book. There is a whole section on “self esteem”.
